Another Place to Buy or Sell in Quartzsite
The Big Tent Opening
Today began the annual RV show with the opening of the Big Tent. Traffic up 95 to it was busy as usual. We were able to get a parking spot at the tent this time around noon rather than being routed out to the sandy wash next to it to get stuck.
Many of the previous vendors were not there but new vendors are filling in well. Verizon, Dish Network, Good Sam Insurance, Escapees, and Honda Generators are there as usual. Purveyors of solar and LED lights are there and busy. Remote controlled helicopters and UFOs are flying through the tent and are still popular big boys toys. Electric bikes and scooters seem to be pretty hot this season as they should be with the high cost of gas and cheap cost to run them. Need a mop? There’s a mop booth. Want the latest gadget to make salsa or a new set of pans? They’re there. There are items for pets, lots of jewelry, RV items, food, and more. The ice cream booth is as popular as ever. Camp chairs are big again.
One reason to go to Quartzsite for the RV show is to find a workamping job. Several employers are in and around the Big Tent looking for camp hosts, store clerks, reservation clerks, maintenance workers, ride operators, etc. Amazon, Adventureland, Thousand Trails, Tetons, and American Land & Leisure, are all there looking for people to hire.
There are lots of contests to enter and wheels to spin for prizes. You might get lucky!
You definitely want to stop by the POP booth outside the tent to buy a souvenir tin cup full of your favorite beverage for only $6-$7. Refills are just $1!
A new addition this year is the Progressive RV Insurance booth outside the tent where you can get your picture taken with Flo (a cutout).
There is also RV servicing going on out in the tent parking lot. Shop the tent while you wait.

Two Days Before The Big Tent
The weather was warm and sunny today. It was a great day for shopping! Lots more rigs pulling in. The La Posa LTVAs and Rice Ranch RV park are filling up nicely. The Dome Rd. area is still wide open with plenty of room yet.
I did notice that some of the vendor spots are still open and some of the vendors who were here the last couple of years are either not here or have changed their wares. I have not seen the scooter rental place here this year and there are signs up now in Tyson Wells denoting the pathways for pedestrians only.
Len the LED guy at Rice Ranch is here again. He sells the best LED bulb replacements. There’s a new guy selling a nice invention for leveling a satellite TV dish tripod quickly who is also at Rice Ranch along the front. I spotted two makeshift barber shops at Rice Ranch as well for the guys.
Solar Bill’s behind La Mesa RV was a hotbed of activity today with lots of solar panels being sold at the current cheap prices and lots of solar system installs going on.
The Main Event has a new vendor but many vendor spaces are still open over there. It isn’t as packed with vendors as in previous years. There is still lots of great stuff like tools for sale in the buildings so don’t overlook this area. You might still find something you need or want there.
Geocaching Meet and Greet in Quartzsite
Today a meet and greet for geocachers in the area was held at the Quartzsite QIA building. Individual geocachers and those from several different groups came to share food, door prizes, notes on upcoming geocaching events in the area, and tips. I rarely see other geocachers when I am out playing the game so it was great to hear from others and hear their experiences and hints. The vice-mayor of Quartzsite who is also a geocacher attended and gave out Quartzsite pins. After the meeting, travel bugs hiding as decals on vehicles out in the parking lot were announced and everyone ran outside to spot all they could and log them.
On the Scene at Quartzsite 2013
I arrived yesterday in Blythe, CA near Quartzsite for the 2013 show. The RV park has filled up considerably though there are still plenty of spaces available. Today I drove over to Quartzsite and can tell you it is in full swing already. There are lots of vendors and plenty of sales going on though they tell me sales are down from previous years and some vendors may need to go to additional shows or work to make up for it. I already saw something new there to consider buying. If you need insurance or want to shop for a better deal, stop by the GMAC booth on “P” row in Tyson Wells and chat with Chris and Charles Yust. They are great agents that offer true personal service. Next to the west parking lot is the key guy who is the only one who could make a key for my trailer right. Don’t get caught without a good spare key. On the south side of Tyson wells is KB Tools again with lots of things for your RV and the homemade ice cream booth is cranking out ice cream as fast as they can. If getting a concealed carry permit that is good in 37 states is something you are thinking about, stop by their booth on that side to sign up for their 2.5 hr. class and get your Arizona issued permit that any US citizen can get.
Traffic is building and parking is filling up early in the day. I had no problem finding a space over at Rice Ranch but Tyson Wells was full on the main drag. You may need to use their parking lot to the west or park at Rice Ranch and walk over.
There are new and used RVs for sale everywhere this year in Quartzsite. I have never seen so many of them on display before. This looks like the year to jump into the RV life or upgrade with so many choices available.
Lots of open space out on the BLM lands right now but plenty of boondockers are already there. Parks are filling slowly.
Weather in Quartzsite is cool and very windy at times but sunny. Highs are in the 50s during the day and low 30s at night so bring warm clothes and a jacket. There is a freeze warning for this weekend. It hasn’t dampened the spirits of the visitors though. Everyone is smiling and waving with excitement.
Y’all come on out to Quartzsite and join us!
Quartzsite 2013 Outlook
If park occupancy is any kind of barometer, next year’s attendance may not be as good as previously. A report in from one of the nearby RV parks shows the park only one third full at this time. Normally the park would be half to two thirds full already. The continued bad economy may be keeping them away or perhaps folks are shortening their time spent there to just include the main show dates. Time will tell. For those of you who are planning to go to Quartzsite for the RV show in January, the good news may be less crowding and road congestion.
Geocaching With Escapees at Quartzsite
Escapees RV club geocachers have released their tentative schedule to get together at Quartzsite in January during the annual RV swap meet. To participate, you can join the Escapees club and get information on the Geocacher Birds Of [of] a Feather (BOF) group at the Escapees booth in the Big Tent during the RV show at the end of January or if you join online or are already an Escapees member, contact Sue Pace at skpgeocachebof at gmail.com before then. Their schedule is available by email to coolrvers at gmail.com.
The annual Geocache BOF Rally will be held Jan. 27-31, 2013 in the Dome Rock area west of Quartzsite. Besides some fun geocaching, there will be seminars, games, a potluck, door prizes, happy hours, socializing, etc. The event is free but donations to help with expenses are certainly welcomed.
Directions: Take frontage road west from Love’s Truck Stop to the intersection of Dome Rock Road and Cholla Road. Look for BOF Signage at each turn.
