Quartzsite RV Show Time!

Quartzsite RV Show & Swap Meet

Are you getting excited yet? The Big Tent is up in Quartzsite and the show opens this Saturday. Whatever you could possibly want for your RV, you will find there along with some great food and product demonstrations. Now is a great time to upgrade your RV to LED lighting with so many choices available at the show. You may also want to consider tire safety and add tire monitors to your RV which you will also find at the show. Need a water filtration setup, new chairs, patio mat, a generator, RV insurance, a camping discount group, or a workamping job? It will all be there. I wonder what the *HOT* show product will be this year…

The Too Crazy Ladies are back so if you need any kind of badge or pin made up, go see them. I got my Escapees badge and work name badge from them. They have lots of fun pre-made pins too and great prices.

Chris and Charles Yust , the best insurance agents I have met with excellent personal service,  have arrived for the show. They are wonderful agents and saved me quite a lot of money on car and RV insurance. Quotes are free so check them out! Booth 426 center aisle in The Big Tent.

Look for food booths over at The Panorama and Rice Ranch that may have cheaper prices on burgers or tacos later in the afternoon. Mmm mmm good! Of course, you must have ice cream too.

As if the RV show isn’t enough to keep you busy, there are a lot of other events this week too. We’ve got steam engines on view at The Main Event. Tyson Wells Sell-A-Rama is kicking off. Not one but two hot air balloon festivals will get you high in Quartzsite and Lake Havasu City. Blythe is having a hoedown with its annual Bluegrass Music Festival while Lake Havasu is hosting a Volkswagen camporee with VW buses from all over the country being shown off along with a pancake breakfast and chili cook-off.  On Sunday, Quartzsfest starts in Quartzsite as amateur radio operators gather for “live demos and innovation in mobile antenna systems, mobile ham shacks, recreational vehicles, portable and mobile EMCOMM systems, off-the-grid living, alternative energy and radio education”.

Have fun this week! You can sleep when you are dead. Winking smile

Best Kept Secret in Quartzsite

Did you know Quartzsite has a rock club where you can learn lapidary, opal cutting, basket making, knapping, wire wrapping, casting, beading and much more? Since 1968, the Quartzsite Roadrunners Gem and Mineral Club has been meeting and teaching classes behind La Mesa RV at 65 Ironwood. The cost to join is $15.00 for the season from November to April 1. Opal cutting class is a one and 1/2 day class that is $15.00.  You can buy an opal rough for $3.00. Faceting is also $15.00, is 1 1/2 days, and they supply the rough. The rest of the classes are only $4.00 a session for either a class or use of the equipment. They have approximately 30 classes each week.

The Quartzsite Roadrunners Gem and Mineral Club is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Thursday mornings they have orientation in the AM and their club meeting at 2PM at the QIA. All are invited. Learn something new and practical this winter in Quartzsite!

For more information, visit them online at http://qrgmc.org/ .

Festivals, Planes, Parades, and Minstrels!

Another busy weekend coming up and hopefully no rain if the weatherman is to be believed. Over at the Main Event on Friday the Food Truck Music Festival will be jamming with all sorts of “gourmet” food and music. Crossing my fingers for the tri-tip truck to be there then or at least during the RV show later. YUM! The festival continues on Saturday and while you are there you can check out the remote control planes on display too. Have you seen Quartzsite’s RC air field? It’s awesome! It looks just like an airport with runways. If you are interested, check out the Quartzsite RC Flyers Club. You are never too old to play!

LTVA Improvements

The Long Term Visitors Areas have added bathrooms! The new bathrooms don’t have showers but they do have toilets. All tenters and others not fully self-contained are required to camp within 500 feet of the new bathrooms. As before, water, trash receptacles, and dump stations are also available.

Showers are available in town at the truck stops and one Laundromat. See our directory for locations and additional information.

Weather Hitting Quartzsite Hard

There’s another weather warning out tonight for near freezing temps on Wednesday morning. It seems to be colder than usual in Quartzsite this year though it is certainly still better than being in the northern states and shoveling snow. The recent wind storm kept many vendors closed for a few days and left a few tenters out in the cold after destroying their tents. Bundle up everyone and keep warm thoughts. If you have a close friend, now would be a good time to get closer!

Economy Taking Its Toll on Quartzsite

Business is down in Quartzsite this year with many snowbirds either not returning or coming for shorter periods. Normally business would be starting to really hop about now. While unemployment is generally down in the U.S., those who work in the Texas oil fields or related industries have been hard hit and that would include gate guards like myself. The biggest hit though may be coming from Canada where the Canadian dollar value has fallen compared to the U.S. dollar thus making a trip south for the winter much more expensive. Many Canadians have decided to brave out the winter at home this year instead of coming down as usual. This is not good news for Quartzsite vendors who have been struggling themselves in recent years with higher booth and permit fees. For those of you who are going to Quartzsite this year, please be sure to give the vendors an extra special smile and be kind to them. Your patronage will be much appreciated.

Don’t forget there will still be lots of shopping and fun activities to do while you are there and, of course, fresh ice cream with apparently shorter lines!

Buy, Sell, or Trade in Quartzsite

While in Quartzsite for just the RV show or for the winter, you can find all sorts of deals and used items in the Facebook group, “Quartzsite AZ. Buy Sell and Trade”. Just copy the name into the search bar in Facebook to find it. You’ll find lots of household goods and furniture, cars, boats, ATVs, RVs, and just about anything else you might want there. Once in a while something is offered free on the group. It’s also a good way to get rid of something you no longer need.

You may also want to check out putting items on consignment at the consignment tent for Discount-RV-Marine.com at Rice Ranch or Len’s LED  and TireTraker tent also at Rice Ranch. Both are just past the RV supply store there along the road.

Quartzsite Predator Warnings

Quartzsite desertQuartzsite in the winter is a wonderful place to be. It is so very relaxing camping out on the wide open desert with friends, family, and pets. Unfortunately, we must all remember it is a desert and comes with dangers all its own including predators. Reports coming in state coyotes may be coming in too close for comfort at the La Posa BLM areas. Beautiful as they may look, they are not pets and are looking to survive like every other living thing. Do not approach them, attempt to feed them, or try to get that great close up picture. Do not leave your pets outside unattended for even a few minutes. To a coyote or hawk, your sweet little fur baby looks like a sweet little dinner or afternoon snack.

Other predators you need to be watching for are thieves. Every year at this time, many portable generators are stolen along with other camping equipment. Lock it all down or put it away if you aren’t using it. Look to see who is camped around you and learn their faces. If you see anything suspicious, use your camera phone to get pictures and license plates (preferably at a distance) and let others know something is amiss. Better to have a picture of nothing wrong than to be kicking yourself for not taking a picture when you could have helped your neighbor.

Don’t let these warnings dampen your fun at Quartzsite. Have a great time as always. Just don’t forget completely about your safety and security.
