Aloha Havasu Weekend

While much of the country has been blasted into freezing temperatures, Quartzsite will be enjoying lovely temps in the 80s this week with nightly lows in the 50s for excellent sleeping. The weather will be perfect this weekend for lots of beach and water fun on Lake Havasu at the Annual Sand, Water, & RV Expo. They will be hosting the Southwest’s biggest motorsports and outdoor recreation show. The cost is only $5 whether you just want to browse and dream or are looking for a new toy to play with.

If you have never been to a Hawaiian Luau, you will get your chance on Saturday Lake Havasu City courtesy of the United Way. There will be Hawaiian music and dancers, a fire show, dinner, dancing, limbo, contests, a raffle, silent auction, and more. Tickets are available online and cost $5 more at the door. I have been to one in Hawaii and it was amazing! The price for this one is actually less than what I paid and a great deal. Aloha!

Colorado River The Place To Be This Weekend

Despite the cooler temps this week, Saturday is expected to be sunny and 79 degrees, perfect weather for racing on the water and eating chili. The schedule this weekend leaves plenty of time to do both! The race will start at the River Lodge Resort at 675 Parker Dam Rd in Parker Dam, CA and end at the Blue Water Resort and Casino in Parker, AZ. If your mother was like mine and never let you say naughty words, now is a great time to holler dam dam dam and get away with it!

In the afternoon, there will be a chili cook off at La Paz County Park for some dam (sorry Mom!) fine tasting and eating.

Classic Cars Roar Into Havasu

For those not in Quartzsite yet, two semis caught fire at the Pilot station on October 8th causing Main street to close in the area for a short time. Both vehicles appear to be a total loss and the station suffered some damage but no one was hurt. Main St. is now open as is the station and the McDonald’s next door.

One of the biggest car shows in the southwest started today in Lake Havasu City. Last year there were over 700 classic cars and trucks to view. The show will continue through Sunday.

Friday starts the Colorado River Regional Crisis Shelter Autumn (domestic violence) Awareness Festival with food, fun, and dancing. Free tickets available at CRRCS office and the Parker Chamber of Commerce or $10 at the gate. Music starts at 7pm. No outside food or drinks allowed.

New Arizona Non Resident OHV Decal Program

Passing this along from the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD):

“NEW ARIZONA NON RESIDENT DECAL PROGRAM:

Looks like we are on target for a Sept 1st roll out of the new non-res ohv decal. Here are some key points of the new program that you may want to share with your club members.

All non-residents will need an OHV decal beginning this fall. The new decal program will go live Sept 1st

The decal will be purchased thru the AZGFD website (www.azgfd.gov) by first setting up a free account (kinda like amazon, the azgfd portal will get you all things azgfd related). Residents will still purchase their decal from the MVD.

Folks can buy as many decals as they wish but only one per vehicle, the stickers are 3”x3″ and orange in color. They will be mailed to whatever address the buyer enters. The customer’s receipt or screenshot of it on a phone will be valid to operate for 30 days. So folks arriving in Qtown for example can order their decal and have it mailed there and still operate there for 30 days or until it arrives. It may take up to 14 days to receive by USPS.

Decals cost non-residents $25 plus a $5 processing fee. The monies from the decal purchase go to the state treasurer and are divided up between agencies for OHV program use/improvement. This money helps purchase signage and build trails for the OHV program, and will benefit the users.

Decals are good for 1 year from the date of purchase, so someone buying their decal in November is good until the following November.

Exemptions can be found in ARS 28-1178 and include people participating in OHV special events, operating on private land, loading or unloading from a vehicle, during a period of emergency if directed by a peace officer, or if it displays a valid dealer license plate.

Decals shall be displayed on the driver’s side of the vehicle as shown on the decal paperwork that they will receive with their decals.

Folks can use this link, http://www.azgfd.gov , to get to the AZGFD Portal account registration page.

Once the decal program goes live the Department will send out notifications to account holders and public with info on where to buy the non-resident decals.”

RIP Paul Winer – “The Naked Guy”

Quartzsite has lost a real icon this week with the passing of Paul Winer, owner of the Oasis bookstore, fine musician, avid nudist, and adult performer. Paul died in his sleep after a long illness. Many a winter snowbird has stopped by his store to see him au natural and have a picture taken with him. His boogie woogie piano concerts were a huge draw and sold out every winter. He is also remembered for Celia’s Rainbow Garden, a memorial park dedicated to his 8 year old daughter who died of a heart infection. Quartzsite will not be the same without him and we will surely miss him.

Pizza, Poker, and Line Dancing

This week we have some fine entertainment from a traveling road show at Silly Al’s Pizza as if the pizza alone wasn’t worth a trip over there. Yum! You can also take a walk in the past at the Hi Jolly Cemetery or play in a golf tournament at the local golf course. You’ll get some exercise with either of these activities to work off that pizza. If you feel like getting out of town for a bit, Lake Havasu is hosting their annual poker run this week and there will be line dancing on the bridge, London Bridge that is. Yeehaw!
